The Bologna Valleys give cyclists the chance to travel through time and civilisations, discovering paths and places where they will hear the echo of the Celts, Etruscans and Romans, the Middle Ages, not to mention the great travellers of the eighteenth century.

Today you will find excellent accommodation, from Bed and Breakfasts, farm-houses, camping grounds, to small and large hotels, built in recent years and provided with the main comforts.

This part of the site will help cyclists to discover the secrets of this suggestive area. Bologna Valleys by bike: a
unique experience!

Equestrian tourism today is a way of rediscovering the horse as a more ‘natural’ means of transport than the car. However, until a hundred and fifty years ago the horse was the only way of travelling relatively quickly from one place to the other.

The territory of the Bologna Valleys, because of its strategic position between the north and south of Italy, was one of the most frequently crossed by travellers, who wished to reach Rome, coming from the north of Italy or other European countries. There are numerous references to the road between Bologna and Florence in the literature of the time, due to the importance of Italy as a favourite site for illustrious travellers attracted by its classical antiquity and history.

Giacomo Casanova, for example, in 1761 spent the night at Monghidoro, and wrote in his diary: ‘I required of them a bed that stupefied the inn-keeper, because to make it I obliged him to put together four…’. In 1811, Stendhal visited Pianoro, Loiano and Monghidoro and wrote: ‘Two Frenchmen travelling in a good carriage accompanied by an intelligent servant can enjoy the pleasures of a salon in the middle of the Apennines, but they will not appreciate the mountains as I do, who travel alone in an open carriage‘.

The trekking route from Bologna to Florence runs through wholesome countryside, quiet woods, and paths that are rough and gentle at the same time, relaxing the mind, body & soul.

Today you can still come down the same beaten path that armies, pilgrims & writers walked for centuries. Rediscover their emotions on a walk that combines the physical field and the cultural one.

It’s possible to walk this course by your own or with an expert guide. There are programs and packages for 2-7 day trips that include transfer luggage from the hotel starting point, breathtaking sunrises & sunsets, magnificent views, and the sounds of nature at its highest beautiful. It will be easy to see a fleeting deer, to follow the flight of a falcon that is on the hunt, or to enjoy the fragrances of the wild and colourful flowers.

Follow ageless footpaths among tall forests and clearings scattered with wild strawberries. Have a chat with an old farmer that has never been tempted to go to the city. Lay down on soft, sweet-smelling grass, or find a refreshing stream running between cyclamen and blackberries.

It is a once in a lifetime experience that will be hard not to repeat again and again.

The region of the Bologna Valleys winds along through 5 Valleys, named after the rivers which run through them. Travelling on foot, by mountain bike or by horse, you will discover the wild and unspoiled nature of the Bologna Apennine.

Following the routes used through the centuries by armies, pilgrims and famous writers, you will admire forest trees or glades with wild strawberries, breathtaking views, or have the chance of looking at an hawk circling above you after its prey, or even running across a roe deer.

You could choose among different itineraries offered by three Parks crossing these Valleys. Starting from the "Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi", with chalky formations and more than 200 grottos, continuing through the "Parco Storico di Monte Sole", to end up at the "Parco dei Laghi di Suviana e Brasimone", full of centuries-old chestnut.

You will immerse yourself in nature and live a unique and glamorous experience by feeling its perfumes, sounds and flavours.

Travelling through the region of Bologna Valleys in the direction of Florence, you cannot miss visiting the Mausoleum dedicated to one of the most famous scientist of last century: Guglielmo Marconi. From the top of these hills he carried out his first experiments on the radio. You will experience the emotions of these discoveries by visiting the Museum of the Marconi Foundation, one of the most important Italian centres for telecommunications.

In these valleys there was a build-up of the most unaffected scientific experiences, as evidenced by several water mills, with which our ancestors used to work enthusiastically putting out their ability. At the Suviana Lake you will notice the dam and the power point, which turns in electrical energy the simple mechanic produced by the old mills.

You will see the photovoltaic power plant, built near the same lake, to catch the sun rays, whereas the wind force is caught by the amazing sails of Monte Galletto.

If you stay longer you can visit the Astronomical Observatory of Monte Orzale, in the vicinity of Loiano. Through its effective telescope you will see something you could never imagine.
